There are some very easy tips to provide quality professional development for all types of employees quickly and inexpensively.  Considering some of these suggestions will make you think about the steps your business should take to ensure that your employees are satisfied, productive, and active team players in your business goals.

·         Create a short and energizing mission statement with a clear summary on your company’s purpose, goals, and benefits.  Make it easily accessible to all employees.  It will create their easy answer to explain to customers why you are great.

·         Analyze your business and list 5-10 benefits that you want everyone to know.  Now make sure that your staff knows them by creating laminated décor in the office or retail area of your choice.  Staff often needs reminders of why they have the job that you have created for them.

·         Create trainings often.  Think of the skills needed to make your customers happy, and develop an ongoing series of training that will empower your staff and make them want to attain their professional development.  Give them an asset to walk away from your company so that they can see the value of working for you.

·         Plan a workshop.  Plan a retreat.  Give something nice to your staff members.  Give them a break.  Employees are not robotic slaves.  They are people who need to build relationships and get information.

·         Give benefits and make staff fully aware of them.  Many benefits become an “unnecessary” expense when businesses see that employees make little use of them.  However, many employers do a poor job of communicating the benefits to employees in a timely manner.  If you have it, flaunt it.

·         Tell people to smile.  It sounds simple, but whether they are on the phone or in person, all staff should smile and treat customers with a certain amount of care.

·         Use food.  Food brings people together, and holiday parties, paid lunches, and unexpected breakfasts add a sense of friendliness to your business.  People want to like you if they have to listen to you.

·         Put it in writing.  Emails are a great way to confirm that you have sent information.  Make employees accountable for checking mail.  It gives you written proof of what you are communicating.

·         Provide timely training.  If you just hired someone, do not throw them into the business environment with customers to ‘see what they do.’  That is ridiculous.  If they say or do the wrong thing, you will have unhappy customers and an embarrassed employee.

Your job as a business owner is to make goals and train staff to meet those goals.  If you don’t do the latter, you will more than likely not see your goals come to fruition.  Take the time and be patient with people, because people are always going to be your most valuable resource for success.
